Matt realised that the culture of some gay dating websites wasn’t right for him, as he didn’t “want physical relationships right out of the bat.” This angered many men. On December 25, 2017, Matt came out to his close family and friends as bisexual, despite knowing he was gay, so that if they reacted badly they could still “hope he might end up with a girl.” They were “completely accepting”. He used to write gay short stories online under the name Alex to hide his true identity. When Matt was 11, he had his first crush on a boy named Alex. He went to a Catholic grade school and middle school, and suffered from bullying, depression, and body image issues. He is gay and demisexual, and has a boyfriend named Michael.
